Patna: Six people were detained for interrogation on Monday after a person was shot dead in a clash between two groups over a land dispute at Koria Nizamat village under Paru police station area in Muzaffarpur district late Sunday night.
Two brothers—Jitendra Bhagat (41) and Jay Prakash Bhagat (44)—were shot at during an altercation. Jitendra later succumbed to his injuries. Altogether six people were injured in the violence, with both parties involved in the dispute sustaining injuries, police said.
According to the police, the dispute centered around 30 katha of land, in which armed assailants allegedly attacked the two brothers.
According to Jay, the confrontation began around 10.30pm while he was walking near a shop about 50 metres from his house.
Paru station house officer (SHO), Monu Kumar, said: "The attackers, reportedly led by Arvind Bhagat, Raju Bhagat, Ravi Bhushan Kushwaha, and others, were armed with sticks, swords and firearms. Both the parties are relatives as well as neighbours. Approximately 15 rounds were fired during the clash.
"The injured were initially taken to Paru PHC and later shifted to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), where Jitendra was declared dead.
Bullet pierced his abdomen. The deceased was employed in a private company in Kolkata," he said.
Others injured include Mahesh Kumar (48), Narendra Kumar (39), Prince Kumar (21) and Ravi Bhushan Kumar (32). All injured are currently receiving treatment at the SKMCH.
"The land dispute between both groups had been going on for several years. The police are conducting an independent investigation, though no formal complaint has been filed by either party yet. Six suspicious people have been detained for interrogation. Additional security measures have been implemented in the area to prevent further violence," the SHO added.
