Separate vertical of cybercrime control unit to be set up in state: DGP
Patna: Director general of police (DGP), Vinay Kumar, on Monday said a separate vertical of the cybercrime control unit would be set up in the state to give special emphasis on investigations related to cyber incidents. The unit will be headed by an ADG-rank IPS officer, he said.
Addressing a press conference, he said: “A total of 24.38 lakh cyber-related complaint calls were received on the National Cyber Reporting Platform (NCRP) portal till Dec 15. Similarly, 1.10 lakh online complaints and 24,100 online complaints related to social media and other cyber crimes were reported on the NCRP portal this year.”
Talking about appointment of constables, the DGP said the process to fill the 19,838 posts of constables is currently underway, and it is expected that the results will be declared in March 2026 after completing the physical examination.
The DGP also said Bihar has become the first state to get conviction of accused persons within 15 days of trial in connection with Sidhwalia PS case 232/2024 in Gopalganj district. “The trial was completed within a record time of 15 days,” he said, adding that the earlier record for completing the fastest trial was 48 days.
“For effective implementation of three new criminal laws, the prosecution directorate has been strengthened. Various categories of 760 posts have been created under the Bihar Prosecution Service. The Bihar Electronic Order (for issuance, receipt, and disposal) Rules 2025 and E-Sakshya Management Rules-2025 have been notified,” he said.
A district prosecution directorate has been constituted in every district, he said, adding that Bihar has become the first state to launch “trial in absentia” following the implementation of new criminal laws of BNS, BNSS.
A total of 2,99,927 pending cases were disposed of in 2025, he said, adding that 1,43,878 accused persons were sentenced in 1,05,291 cases.
“Four convicts were awarded capital punishment, while 1,097 got life imprisonment, 533 received more than 10 years of imprisonment, 1,410 received less than 10 years and more than 2 years of jail, while 1,37,983 convicts were fined or asked to fill bonds,” the DGP said.
He said a proposal has been prepared to purchase over 2,000 two-wheelers (scooty) next year for ‘Abhaya Brigade’ formed for security of girl students.
Under the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS), which provides services through Dial 112, more than 50 lakh people have been provided emergency services in the past three years. The average response time of ERSS is 14 minutes, which is second in the country, the DGP said, adding that a separate building for Dial 112 will be constructed in the Rajiv Nagar area of the state capital.
Jail radio service started in prisons
Addressing the press conference, secretary (home)-cum-inspector general of prisons, Pranav Kumar, said the jail radio service has been launched in all the prisons of the state, adding that a system will be installed in 15 jails at a cost of Rs26 crore to prevent and check the misuse of cellphones inside the jails.
“Modern visitors’ rooms are being built in all the jails where visitors can meet the inmates,” Pranav said, adding that more than 50% of the work of rooms has been completed.
