Saran ZP top post to go to woman

: The prestigious post of chairperson of Saran zila parishad, which has been occupied by persons like Moulana Mazharul Haque, Kamla Ray, Srinandan Prasad Narain Sharma and Ram Shekhar Prasad Singh, is set to be occupied by a woman from general category after the panchayati raj elections in the state. The State Election Commission had recently declared the post reserved for general category woman.

The post had earlier been reserved for backward category. Two women from backward category - Seema Devi and Mehnaz Khatoon - were elected to the post in 2006 and 2011, respectively. Mehnaz was dislodged after a no confidence motion was passed against her. She was replaced by outgoing chairperson Chhoti Kumari who completed her full term.

Saran district board, now known as zila parishad, was constituted in 1924, long before the country's independence. Freedom fighter Moulana Mazharul Haque was nominated as its first chairperson and continued till 1927. After him, Srinandan Prasad Narain Sharma, Jaideo Narain Singh, Kamla Ray, Dalan Singh, Kumar Kalika Singh, Ram Shekhar Prasad Singh and many eminent persons were nominated to this post. After introduction of three-tier panchayati raj system, Baijnath Prasad Singh Vikal was elected to this post followed by Ram Pravesh Rai, Sheo Pujan Rai, Seema Devi, Mehnaz Khatoon and Chhoti Kumari.
