A villager was shot dead by a jawan of SAP at Pirpainti village of Chainpur panchayat in Bihar's Gopalganj district on Friday.
GOPALGANJ: In a shocking incident, a villager was shot dead by a jawan of the Special Auxillary Police (SAP) jawan shot dead a villager at Pirpainti village of Chainpur panchayat under Hathua police outpost in Bihar's Gopalganj district late on Friday night. While the victim has been identified as Anil Singh, the SAP jawan involved in the incident has been named as one Ashok Kumar Singh.
Gopalganj DM M Rai described the incident as shocking and added that he asked Gopalganj SP R K Rathi to take action against the accused. He said that the SAP jawan had been detained at the PS. A group of SAP jawans carrying arms had gone to the said village in civies late on Friday night. "As several dacoities had taken place in the village earlier, the villagers mistook the jawans as dacoits and raised an alarm.
Anil, who was sleeping on the roof of his house with towel around him, jumped and tried to escape from there. One of the SAP jawans, later identified as Ashok Kumar Singh, allegedly opened fire, killing Anil on the spot," the DM said adding that later SAP jawan claimed that he had to open fire as Anil tried to snatch his rifle. The DM, however, rebuffed the story of the jawan, saying that if Anil was really snatching arms of the said SAP jawan, how he (read Anil) was shot from behind.
Rai further stated that he has ordered for withdrawal of all SAP jawans from different police stations of the district. These jawans would now move under DSP-rank officers in case their services are required anywhere, Rai said, adding that he had sent a recommendation to the state government for government job to the deceased's wife, who is a matriculate. Earlier, the villagers blocked the Meerganj-Gopalganj road for over four hours on Saturday, demanding immediate arrest of the SAP jawan and adequate compensation to the family members of the deceased. On getting information, Rathi reached the spot and assured action against the erring jawan. The blockade was later lifted. Hathua SDPO Shankar Jha said that SAP jawans had gone to Pirpainti to conduct raid. Defending Ashok Kumar Singh, he said that Anil had caught the assault rifle of the jawan. "Though the said jawan should have restrained himself, he opened fire, killing Anil on the spot," the SDPO said, adding that Anil was evading arrest in connection with an extortion case, lodged against him in the year 2005. Jha denied that Anil was shot from behind. "Actually, two bullet marks were found on his body, one on the front portion and another on his back side," the SDPO said.
