MADHUBANI: In a clean and calm operation, bandits made good their escape after taking away Rs 23.51 lakh in cash and revenue stamps, also reportedly worth several lakh, from the chest of the local head post office (HPO) on the main station road here on Friday night. Surprisingly, the incident occurred despite the official deployment of 10 armed homeguard jawans on the HPO campus.
As per the reported versions of the armed guards, the criminals, numbering about 15-20, and armed with sticks and knives, tied their hands and feet with ropes and took away their rifles before breaking open the chest of the post office. According to the guards, the criminals, first, cut the lock of the main entrance before cutting open the locks of the cash enclosure and the chest. And fortunately for them, Saturday being the salary day, the chest was overflowing with cash.
On being informed about the incident to the Town police station, which is only few furlongs away from the HPO, the police reached the site of occurrence in the wee hours of Saturday. The police, however, retrieved all the ten rifles from the drains inside the campus of the post office and no round of ammunition was found missing. All jawans, however, have been detained by the police for interrogation while one has reportedly gone underground. The detained guards include Vijay Kumar Yadav, Shyama Nand Yadav, Dhanik Lal Yadav, Ram Baboo Singh, Ram Suresh Singh, Ram Udgar Yadav, Lal Baboo Yadav, Surya Narain Sah and Shiv Lal Yadav.
