Retired Army man killed while defending sister from assault in Siwan village

Patna: A 70-year-old retired Army man was beaten to death while rescuing his sister from an alleged assault by some villagers in Siwan’s Sherhi village in MH Nagar police station area late on Thursday night. Three others, including the sister, were also seriously injured in the attack.Police have registered an FIR on the basis of a written application by the family of deceased Gautam Singh and launched a manhunt to nab the accused, said MH Nagar station house officer (SHO) Rupesh Kumar Verma, who had reached the village with a force and controlled the situation.According to the police, Singh’s sister was returning home after cleaning a Durga temple late on Thursday evening, when some local strongmen started assaulting her physically. Hearing the commotion, Singh, along with others, reached the spot, when the goons beat allegedly him to death with sticks and rods.A seriously injured Singh was taken to the local health centre by the family members and villagers, when doctors there declared him dead. The other injured people were referred to sadar hospital after primary treatment.The SHO said the matter appears to be of a personal dispute. “An investigation has been started into the matter. Police have intensified raids to arrest the accused,” he said.Meanwhile, a large number of villagers gathered at Singh’s house and demanded immediate arrest of the accused. The villagers said that Singh was friendly, who was always at the forefront of social work.
