PURNIA: The Purnia police have busted a syndicate of mafia dons thriving in pilfering and smuggling antique and precious idols, when they on Monday confiscated six rare artefacts from a remote village under Dagarwa police station some 20 km from here. They also stumbled on hard evidences which link them to big cartels with deeper national and international links. The rare antique idols, which are dated some 2,500 to 3,000 years back and traced to Mauryan dynasty and Pal dynasty periods, are valued at Rs 25 crore, according to the police.
Seven persons have so far been arrested in this connection, police said. Purnia SP B S Meena, talking to TOI on Wednesday, admitted a big racket was involved in the theft of idols, and some of the seized idols were not those which had been pilfered from temples across Purnia district last year. "The Purnia police swung into action after they intercepted some conversation on cellphones. Calls were made from Purnia jail which revolved around transactions of money worth lakhs," the SP said.
The police were amazed to know that the mafia dons had in their possession firearms like AK 47, the SP said. After extensive interrogation, the arrested persons divulged vital information relating to their links to the underworld of the syndicates thriving on smuggling of rare artefacts, the SP said. "We are working on the clues divulged by them which may lead to unravelling of the racket," he said. After the seizure of the idols, an archaeologist Dr Rameshwar Prasad was summoned to assess them. He assessed the possible time. According to reports, a Dagarwa police team headed by officer in-charge Gautam Kumar raided the hideout of the mafia dons at a village under Dagarwa police ststion and seized half a dozen precious idols.
