Patna: In a major boost to the state’s skill-development ecosystem, the Jamalpur-based Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (IRIMEE), one of the oldest and most reputed training centres of Indian Railways, has been roped in to provide advanced technical training to faculty members of Bihar’s Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs).
The initiative, launched under the PM Sector Review Project, aims to significantly upgrade teaching standards and ensure that ITI students receive world-class skill training, said IRIMEE director general Animesh Sinha.
The tie-up marks an important step towards preparing youth for the demands of modern engineering and manufacturing sectors. The training is being provided free of cost by Indian Railways as part of its commitment to contributing to regional development, he said, adding IRIMEE started conducting specialised modules for faculty members from ITI Munger and ITI Tarapur on Wednesday itself.
According to Sinha, these modules focus on both theoretical knowledge and hands-on expertise, enabling teachers to transfer advanced skills effectively to their students. The initial phase covers cutting-edge areas such as advanced welding technologies, plasma cutting techniques, including first hand underwater plasma cutting skills, and other modern mechanical and electrical engineering practices followed globally by the rail industry, he said.
The intent is not merely to upgrade technical competencies but also to expose ITI faculty to global best practices followed in heavy engineering and manufacturing. Trainers at IRIMEE are customising content specifically for Bihar’s skill-development needs, he said.
According to the director general, the railways, known for constantly upgrading its engineering capabilities to match global standards, is leveraging its expertise to help Bihar bridge long-existing gaps in technical training.
By equipping ITI faculty with advanced, industry-relevant skills, Bihar aims to make its youth more employable in competitive sectors such as manufacturing, railways, construction and heavy engineering. The partnership with IRIMEE will set a benchmark for other states to follow, Sinha said, adding more ITIs across Bihar are expected to be included in the coming months for training.
