Patna: The psychology department of Patna Women’s College organised a workshop on "Career options in psychology with special reference to clinical psychology" here in which a large number of students participated.
Addressing the students at the workshop on Saturday, key resource person Pranay Kumar Gupta of the psychology department at the College of Commerce, Arts and Science under Patliputra University spoke at length about the subject and its various branches and the career options available in all these branches.
He enumerated various career options of teaching, undertaking research and counselling in different branches of psychology, including child psychology, neuropsychology, organisational psychology, and sports psychology.
He further poined out that clinical psychologists must possess knowledge of psychological theory and practice and have an interest in how humans think and interact with one another. They must have strong research and team working skills but they must also be able to work on their own. Students who pursue clinical psychology should have strong critical-thinking skills and have the ability to quickly identify the effectiveness of a treatment plan and then make adjustments to better benefit their clients.
He said there are a variety of career opportunities for clinical psychologists. These include substance (drug) abuse counsellors, human resource positions, family or marriage counsellors, forensic psychologists, child psychologists and learning disabilities specialists.
At the outset, psychology department head Nupur Sinha welcomed the guests. Students from both undergraduate and postgraduate departments as well as their teachers attended the workshop.
