Patna University Students’ Union (PUSU) polls postponed over campus incidents
PATNA: Patna University Students’ Union (PUSU) elections, scheduled for Feb 28, were postponed on Saturday due to the “indecent behaviour of students”.
A senior PU teacher said this was perhaps the first time in the history of the university that student union elections had to be postponed on the grounds of students’ indecent behaviour.
In a notification issued by the students’ welfare dean, Yogendra Kumar Verma, it was stated that polling for the PUSU elections had been postponed for an indefinite period due to some unfortunate and unsavoury incidents in recent days on the university campus.
The notification stated that a group of students belonging to a particular student organisation had forcefully entered the Patna Women’s College campus and taken out a procession, carrying banners and printed posters and shouting slogans, in clear violation of the election code of conduct.
It further stated that another group of students forcefully entered a classroom at Patna Science College on Saturday and misbehaved with a teacher and PU officials present there.
PUSU chief election officer Shankar Kumar said the university would not tolerate such indecent behaviour by students during the elections, which was against the provisions of the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.
The university was scheduled to release on Saturday evening the final list of candidates contesting the elections for various union posts after the withdrawal of nominations.
