Protest over JDW College building transfer

PATNA

: The J D Women’s College students on Friday staged protest over the Pataliputra University’s (PPU) decision to utilize the new arts block building as PG centre of the university. College students raised slogans against the college principal incharge and PPU while opposing the building transfer to the university.

(Hons) student Roma said their protest would continue till the university and college gave in writing that the building would be used only for the arts department students of the college. “Out of the 7,000 students, around 2,000 are in arts faculty but there is no separate block for us. We have three buildings on the campus, one is for academic and science block, the second is PG block while the last one is for vocational courses. Most of the time, our classes are conducted in the library or in any available class in science block,” she said.

Another student, Misa Bharti, complained that arts faculty students have to take classes in two shifts due to scarcity of classrooms in college. “The new building is near completion and we have heard that the college has transferred it to the university as it doesn’t have its own campus. It is not our fault that our college became a constituent college of PPU,” said Bharti, a second year Economics (Hons) student.

According to sources, former college principal Prof Shashi Singh resigned on Wednesday after the university pressurised her to transfer the new building for PPU PG centre. “Around 95% of the faculty opposed the decision to use the new building as PG centre, because it’s a girls college and we don’t want boys to come to the campus. We have less classes compared to students and now the university wants to transform it as co-ed PG centre,” said a faculty member.

The new principal incharge Punam Kumari, however, dismissed the allegations and said the college did not transfer the building to PPU.
