The stupa was dedicated to a woman, Sujata from Bakraur village, who had fed kheer to Buddha at the spot, when he was sitting on meditation under a peepal tree for six years and his body was emancipated. After eating the kheer, Siddhartha regained his strength and went on to find the Middle Path to his awakening. In the honour of the woman, a stupa was constructed by the Pala dynasty king at the site of her residence.

Dungeshwari holds an eminent place in Buddhist history as prince Siddhartha meditated for six years in the Prag Bodhi caves on the hills before his journey to attain enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Mahabodhi Mahavihara.
The route from Dungeshwari to Mahabodhi Mahavihara was the last journey Buddha undertook before attaining enlightenment. The Dungeshwari hills are located around 7km east of Bodh Gaya. Halfway towards the top of the hills, there are three caves, known as Mahakala or the Prag Bodhi caves. From top of the Dungeshwari hills, one can catch the sight of Mahabodhi Mahavihara. The hilltop is dotted with seven Buddhist stupas and the remains of five of the stupas can still be seen there.
