PATNA: Teachers and pensioners of the Patliputra University (PPU) and Magadh University (MU) have not been paid their salaries and pensions since March 2022 causing much hardship. The universities, however, have blamed the state government for not releasing funds.
Irked at the inordinate delay, Patliputra University Teachers' Association (PPUTA) has threatened to sit on a dharna and demonstrate in front of the PPU headquarters if salaries and pensions are not paid latest by June 10.

PPU vice-chancellor (VC) Prof R K Singh is in charge of Magadh University also. Thus the association has decided to demonstrate before the PPU headquarters, said PPUTA president Prof A K Singh Thakur.
According to Prof Thakur , "The association submitted a memorandum to the Raj Bhavan and the CM's secretariat on Thursday stating therein the plight of the teachers. Most of the retired teachers who are in seventies, are dependent on their monthly pension so that they can at least afford their monthly expenses on medicines."The association general secretary Prof Hridya Narain Singh said state education minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary had earlier assured the university and college teachers of timely payment of salaries and pension from January 2022. "Unfortunately, teachers still continue to be victim of the apathetic attitude of the state government towards non-payment of salary and pension for want of funds," he said.
According to PPU VC Prof RK Singh, delay is on the part of state government which has not released funds. "Even the salary of the VC has not been released by the government," he said.
Former MU senator Prof V D Singh said monthly pension is the only source of survival for teachers and their families. Those who have been ailing for long, need medical consultation and medicines on time. "Denial of pension is tantamount to cruelty with the teachers who have contributed for the development of society," he added .
Prof Sita Ram Singh, who superannuated from BD College, Patna, said he is a chronic patient of Parkinson and neuro diseases. "How can I survive without medicines ? Besides, I am fully dependent on medicines and thus delay in pension is causing much hardships," he said .
