CHHAPRA/PATNA: State govt on Sunday transferred Saran superintendent of police (SP) Gaurav Mangla, following the post-poll violence in the district that left one person dead. Mangla has been instructed to report to the Bihar Police headquarters in Patna till further order, as per a notice issued in this regard by the state Home department.

Kumar Ashish, a 2012-batch Bihar cadre IPS officer, has been appointed as the new SP of Saran, in compliance with the directive issued by the Election Commission of India. Ashish, who serves as Muzaffarpur Rail SP, will assume charge with immediate effect. Ashish had earlier served as SP of Madhepura, Nalanda, Kishanganj and Motihari.

On May 20, one person was killed and two others were injured in the post-poll violence between BJP and RJD workers at Bada Telpa area near Bhikhari Thakur Chowk in Saran. BJP supporters had allegedly shot at three RJD workers, resulting in death of one worker and injuries to two others, one of them currently undergoing treatment.

The police have so far arrested two persons in connection with the violence and constituted a SIT to nab the absconding accused.
