Police raid PMCH prisoners’ ward, two arrested

A Patna police team after Saturday midnight conducted raid at the prisoners’ ward of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) where Anil Sharma, an undertrial of Hajipur jail, was found with his two personal attendants and a woman relative.

PATNA: A Patna police team after Saturday midnight conducted raid at the prisoners’ ward of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) where Anil Sharma, an undertrial of Hajipur jail, was found with his two personal attendants and a woman relative. Police seized objectionable items and eight bottles of alcohol.
Patna SSP Manu Maharaaj said, “We received a call on 100 that Anil Sharma was enjoying during his stay at PMCH.

We conducted the raid at around 1.30am and found two guys, Imran Ansari and Manoj Sharma, in his room. A woman was entering the room at that time. Sharma told us that the woman was his niece and came to see him. He introduced Imran and Manoj as his driver and cook, respectively.”
He said both the guys were arrested and objectionable items and bottles of alcohol seized. “I wrote to the Vaishali SP to inquire into the case. Four policemen of Vaishali were deployed for security reasons at the ward while four of Patna district were also deployed there. Action will be taken against the eight policemen for allowing visitors inside the ward during night,” the SSP said.
He said a case has been lodged against Anil for illegal activities inside the hospital premises. The woman was released on bond as she claimed to be Anil’s relative. “I have also asked the hospital authorities about the status of Anil’s treatment as he has been there for about a year,” he added.
Anil was admitted to the PMCH in October last following the death of a prisoner Rambalak Rai in Hajipur jail. The then CM Nitish Kumar had ordered a probe into the matter by then IG (prisons) Anand Kishore. According to police sources, the postmortem report of Rai confirmed that he was strangulated. Jail inmates suspected that prisoners of the cell where Rai was lodged killed him over caste issue.
Anil, Chittaranjan Sharma and Chita Singh were sent to PMCH as they were beaten by other inmates who suspected that these three had killed Rai.
