PATNA: Winter chill intensified in the state on Thursday even as India Meteorological Department (IMD) declared severe cold day conditions in Patna, Gaya,

Muzaffarpur

, Supaul and

Forbesganj

and cold day conditions in Bhagalpur and

Purnia

.

In meteorological parlance, cold day condition is declared when the minimum temperature touches 10 degrees C or low and there is a departure of 4.5-6.4 degrees C in maximum temperature. Severe cold day condition, on the other hand, is declared when the minimum temperature touches 10 degrees C or low and there is a departure of more than 6.5 degrees C in maximum temperature.

It is the first time this winter that cold day and severe cold day conditions have been declared in parts of the state.

There seems to be no respite from the frosty weather conditions as Patna Meteorological Centre has predicted that cold day conditions along with dense or very dense fog would prevail in the city in morning hours on Friday and Saturday. Similar weather conditions have been predicted in other major towns in the state, including Gaya, Bhagalpur and Purnia.

In its daily weather bulletin issued on Thursday evening, Patna Meteorological Centre stated that night temperatures would continue to remain below normal by two to four notches at several places in the state over the next two to three days.

Day as well as night temperatures in Patna and almost the entire state have plunged considerably over the past few days. The state capital woke up to the coldest morning of the season on Thursday with minimum temperature plunging to 7.6 degrees C, more than five notches lower than Wednesday. Minimum temperature at Gaya was also recorded at 7.6 degrees C. Dehri in Rohtas district was the coldest place in the state on Thursday with a minimum temperature of 5 degrees C.

Day temperature also witnessed substantial plunge in Patna over the past few days. The maximum temperature in Patna plunged from 20.3 degrees C on Monday to 15.6 degrees C on Tuesday.

Weathermen have attributed the prevailing chilly weather to cold westerly and northwesterly winds blowing from snow laden Himalayan peaks in the northern region. Officials at Patna Meteorological Centre said westerly winds were blowing in the afternoon hours on Thursday at an average speed of 2-4kmph.
