Patna: Patna Police in 40 days detained and arrested 812 persons in cases related to women safety from across the Patna district. Police have lodged 76 cases and fined 285 vehicles for playing vulgar songs. But during taking the stern action against the 'Romeo' police are facing issues like the accused and the victims were known to each other and thus case should not be lodged.
Central Range DIG Shalin took an intiative to sensitize young girls and women to come forward to lodge their complaints if they are facing any kind harassment like eve-teasing. The drive was launched early in August, this year. "During the massive drive, police arrested many students who belong to premium institutes of the city. In several cases, the accused in his defence told police that he used to know the girl or they were in a relationship which does not exist anymore. Many people think it is a good ground for defence in such cases," said Shalin adding that "Let me clear a fact that prior acquaintance, even intimacy does not give any man the right to pounce upon a woman. In some other cases that we came across, the reason given for a boy's such act was that he had been rejected by the girl he loved. The ""jilted lover"" story may evoke a lot of sympathy, even empathy in some men, yet it can be no justification for assault or cyber bullying." He also gave reference to the recently released movie Pink in which the message was clear that when a girl says - No it mean No.
Students sat on agitation after Patna Police arrested a second year student of Chanakaya National Law University (CNLU) for allegedly stalking a student of a prominent city based women's college. Sources with the police said, "The student showed us messages and proof that they were in a relationship earlier but recently the girl has rejected him. The girl's mother had lodged a complaint who had a disliking for the guy. But in such cases too, the boys should refrain from attempting such act because nothing will justify the act of violating a woman's safety."
According to the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for the year of 2015, altogether 1,041 cases of rape were lodged in Bihar among which 954 offenders were known to the victims.
Patna Police detained and arrested the highest numbers of offenders from Danapur 79, Pirbahore 77, Patliputra 47, Khajekala 46 and Agamkuan 40 in the 40 days.
