Patna DM inspects sites for cruise terminal, jetty and ship repair hub
Patna: District magistrate (DM) Thiyagarajan S M on Thursday inspected Kurji-Digha stretch to identify sites for upcoming inland waterways projects, including a world-class cruise terminal at Pahalwan Ghat, a community jetty at Digha Ghat, and a ship repair facility in Kurji. The DM said the initiatives will strengthen Patna’s river-based transport network and boost tourism and economic activity.
The DM first visited Pahalwan Ghat, where two acres of land were earmarked for the construction of a world-class cruise terminal. During the visit, officials briefed that the terminal would serve as a key addition to Patna’s river-based tourism infrastructure.
At Digha Ghat, the DM identified a 20m x 20m site for a community jetty, which is expected to facilitate local river transport and improve passenger access along the Ganga.
The DM further informed that five acres of land in Kurji have already been allotted to the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) for establishing a ship repair facility. Once operational, this centre will enable maintenance of vessels within Patna itself, reducing turnaround time and creating new employment opportunities.
Calling the cruise terminal project “significant”, the DM said IWAI is expediting work and the district administration is extending full support. The proposed terminal will be an advanced, modern facility that can position Patna as a major hub for river cruises. “It will also strengthen river-based economic activities and enhance infrastructure for inland water transport,” the DM said, adding that waterways offer an eco-friendly mode of travel.
Highlighting the govt’s commitment to the city’s multi-dimensional development, the DM said hundreds of infrastructure projects — including roads, bridges and flyovers — are underway across Patna.
He also stated that the Water Metro service is planned for launch later this month, with preparations in full swing. In its first phase, the service will operate between Digha and Kangan Ghat, with future expansion already under consideration.
With the upcoming ship repair centre and cruise terminal, officials expect an increase in vessel movement on the Ganga, leading to job creation and improved river transport services in the region.
