Opposition holds protests over crime against women
Patna: Opposition members held protests in the porticos of the state legislature on Friday over a “sudden spurt in rape cases” in the state. While former CM Rabri Devi led the opposition’s protests outside the state legislative council, her son Tejashwi Prasad Yadav launched the attack on the state govt outside the state assembly.
Holding placard in hands, Rabri was seen raising slogans against the govt over the law and order situation as other opposition members joined her. Questioning the govt for its alleged failure to put a check on rape cases in the state, she asked if this should be called the “Ram Rajya”.
“Rape incidents are taking place almost every day across the state but instead of putting a check on such cases, the govt is doing nothing... Isi ko Ram Rajya kahte hain?” she asked the reporters. Raising the issue in the council, she alleged as many as 35 incidents of rape were reported in Feb itself, and asked the Chair to inform what the govt was doing to tackle crime.
Replying to her remark, minister Sunil Kumar said the govt was indeed worried over such incidents and actions were being taken against the criminals. “Those violating the law won’t be spared at any cost,” the minister said.
Outside the state assembly, it was Tejashwi who led the charge against the govt, alleging the crime has reached its peak since the govt was not sensitive towards it. Alleging criminal incidents have increased in the BJP-ruled states, Tejashwi charged the govt with intimidating the opposition instead for raising this issue.
“It is the job of the opposition to raise this issue in the House to ensure the victims get justice but instead, they are being threatened,” Tejashwi alleged, and questioned the way the chief minister had to part with the crucial home department to its ally, the BJP.
With the govt coming under fire over the law and order situation, the social media handles of the RJD, its top leaders and legislators remain flooded with clippings and reports of criminal incidents. “Nirbhaya-like cases are taking place every day in Bihar but who cares?” said a pinned RJD social media post.
