PATNA: The first of its kind river patrolling police station (RPPS) on the bank of Ganga at village Maujipur near Fatuha in Patna district is probably the first police station which does not have a single FIR in its register since its creation in May, 2011.
Though the crime graph in the Ganga diara area has gone up in the past couple of months, the victims are confused about where to lodge their complaints.
"A few days back, some miscreants vandalized a restaurant of the state tourism department and a 'go-kart scooter' in the Ganga diara area. But we had to go to Sonepur police station to lodge an FIR as the area falls under their jurisdiction. There should be a separate police station to handle the incidents taking place in the riverine area," said Shekhar Singh, a tourism department official.
According to the special task force (STF) inputs, huge quantity of marijuana and heroin are routed through the Ganga. "Jethuli village of Fatuha, Kaladiara of Bakhtiyarpur, diara of Sonepur are among the storehouses for keeping the marijuana and heroin for selling them all over the state, especially in Patna," said an STF officer. The excise department officials also destroyed several illicit liquor units in the last couple of months in the diara area.
The state government had spent over Rs 56 lakh in setting up the lone riverine police station at Patna and other maintenance work, but to no avail. Built by the Bihar Police Building Construction Corporation (BPBCC), the police station is spread over about 6,000sqft on the southern bank of the Ganges and consists of an inspection room, a separate room for the station house officer besides barracks and a mess. With electricity hardly available there, the policemen have been able to do little more than patrolling the area.
Fatuha DSP Sunita Kumari said, "The police station runs under one inspector rank SHO along with four police personnel. The cops use a boat hired from a private party for patrolling the area."
A senior official wishing anonymity said, "The RPPS at Fatuha patrols only in the Didarganj and Fatuha river area. Instead of lodging any complaint, the policemen redirect the complaints to Didarganj and Fatuha police stations even as the objective behind setting up such police station was to check crime in the diara area of Ganga."
Vox-populi "Around 20 vehicles which were parked near NIT campus, were vandalized. We had gone for picnic in the Ganga diara. Why cannot the police ensure security in these riverside areas?"

"I went to Ganga diara to celebrate my birthday with friends. The area is very beautiful but two policemen at around 4.30pm pushed us to leave the place saying it would become 'unsafe' for the girls. Why can't the administration rid the area of criminals?"
- Manjit Kaur, a college student
"On special occasions, there are a large number of policemen in the diara area. Why can't they be present on other days too? The government should concentrate on the beautification of diara area like other riverside cities of Varanasi and Kolkata.
