Kumar Mandal
has bagged the prestigious Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship sponsored by the United States-India Education Foundation (USIEF
). He is the first faculty member from the NIT Patna
to win this fellowship. The Fulbright Programme is the flagship international educational exchange programme sponsored by the US government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries.
Mandal, an assistant professor in the department of architecture, is an alumnus of
Bihar College of Engineering (now NIT Patna) where he completed his bachelor's degree in architecture. He completed his post-graduation studies in city planning from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He also completed the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Sustainable Development and the Role of Technology from the EPFL, Switzerland.
At present, he is doing research on "Climate change impacts on water availability: Measures for sustainable development for the city of Patna". His area of specialization for this fellowship is energy, sustainable development and climate change (for city planning). He has been invited to discuss his research in many countries, including France, Australia, Brazil, China, Korea, Israel, Hungary and Russia.
The Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship will help him in carrying out a part of his doctoral research in the University of Arizona, Tucson, USA, for nine months starting from September, 2013. Before going to this university, he will also take part in Gateway Orientation at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA, USA, from September 9 to September 13, 2013, Mandal said.
Through this research work, he intends to generate awareness and make all possible effort to get the impact of climate change included as a parameter in the decision-making process of the urban planning of the country in general and the state in particular.
