Bihar: Naugachia fire kills five of family

: Five members of a family were charred to death when a fire broke out in their house at Shreepur village in

Naugachia

area on Sunday night.

The deceased includes four children including two boys and two girls and an elderly woman. Three others have received severe burn injuries and have been referred to Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College Hospital (JLNMCH), Bhagalpur.

The deceased have been identified as Krishna Kumar (4), Kranti Kumar (8), Shailja Kumari(6) and Pushpa Kumari (4), all children of one Satish Singh.

The elderly woman has been identified has Taruna Devi (56), aunt of Satish Singh. Those who received burn injuries are Karuna Devi, mother of Satish Singh, Paras Singh (brother of Satish Singh) and some other family members.

The incident occurred when the family had lit a bonfire in the village during the night which they forgot to douse before going to sleep. Sparks arising from the bonfire not only engulfed Satish Singh’s house but nine other houses in the neighbourhood.

According to police sources, while the elderly people somehow managed to rush out of the house they could not rescue their children. Naugachia SP Nidhi Rani said, “The incident occurred on Sunday night and we are providing all possible medical assistance to affected families. The fire was brought under control late night.”
