Patna: The Union ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) on Friday inked an MoU with the IIT-Patna with a view to strengthening tunnel safety and protecting hill slope for national highways.
The MoU was signed by director T N Singh and civil engineering department head Amit Kumar Verma from IIT-P and MoRTH secretary V Umashankar, road development director general Vinay Kumar Rajawat and additional director general Rahul Gupta.
Singh said this partnership aims to address safety and resilience challenges in complex and geologically sensitive terrains, particularly in hilly regions. The collaboration draws on lessons learned from recent tunnel construction and operational incidents across the country and seeks to strengthen scientific, engineering, and institutional capabilities in this critical sector, he said.
Singh further pointed out that this initiative aligns with MoRTH’s broader vision of improving infrastructure safety, sustainability, and resilience, especially in challenging and high-risk terrains. Besides, the institution will get an opportunity to generate evidence-based engineering solutions that mitigate construction risks and operational hazards associated with tunnels and hill slopes. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to safer, more durable, and future-ready highway infrastructure, the director added.
