PATNA: Cold, it seems, has decided not to hit the state severely this time. Officials of the meteorological department, Patna, say that chances are that the state might have to do with a mild winter this year. "Though the temperature in Patna may reduce to around eight degrees in the coming three days, we don't see a possibility of it dropping below seven degrees for some time to come," said S I Laskar, director-in-charge, Meteorological Centre, Patna.
He said that though western disturbances have developed, the anti-cyclonic wind in central India are preventing them from coming to Bihar, thereby meaning an absence of a cold spell, at least in near future in Patna. Laskar, however, added that foggy conditions will continue to prevail here."The fog content may increase in the coming few days," said Laskar. Foggy conditions, have, in fact, already hampered the movement of trains in the state.
Trains are running at lower speed at nights and in the mornings to avoid accidents due to the low visibility due to fog. In the fog prone areas like Barahiya, Rampur and Dumra, the speed of trains is reduced to 40 to 60 kmph at night and in the morning as against the normal speed of 90 to 110 kmph. The railways have also officially declared the Mokama Taal areas as fog prone and trains plying there are running at lower speed at nights and in the morning hours.
Magadh Express and Shramjeevi Express, both of which originate from Delhi, have been affected badly with their arrivals being delayed almost everyday. A senior East Central Railway (ECR) official said that the Howrah-bound Toofan Express and the Sealdah-bound Lalquila Express have been subject to short termination at Mughalsarai due to fog. On Wednesday, several trains entering the Danapur division got delayed due to fog. While the Surat-Bhagalpur Express got delayed by 11 hours, the Dadar-Bhagalpur Express, Janata Express, Lalquila Express, Amritsar Mail, Farakka Express and Secunderabad-Patna Express were the other trains which were delayed by one to four hours on Wednesday. At major bridges of the state like Koelwar bridge, the Rajendra bridge and the Kiul bridge, the train speed is being reduced to 25 to 30 kmph. While, all this was on account of the foggy conditions in Bihar, similar conditions in Delhi and Mumbai have caused delay in flights. Flights of Indian Airlines and Air Sahara were flying behind schedule by almost and hour on Wednesday on account of low visibility caused due to fog. The meteorological department, however, doesn't see foggy conditions reaching its extreme shortly. So, chances are that all your stylish coats and warmer pullovers that you had been longing to flaunt might just remain safe in your wardrobes this winter.
