Man held with huge cache of arms in city

Patna: Police on Sunday seized huge cache of arms and ammunition, including three magazines of AK-47 rifle, and arrested one person near Kurkuri bridge under Beur police station. The arrested person has been identified as Sanjay Kumar Rai, a resident of Beur.
Police said the cache, which also included 214 pieces of 7.62mm bullets and 320 bullets of 8mm bore, was probably meant for supply either to Maoists or criminals.
City SP (west) Satyaprakash said acting on a specific information that a huge quantity of arms and ammunition was being smuggled into Patna, the police intensified vehicle checking drive in the city. “A team led by Phulwarisharif ASP Rakesh Kumar frisked Sanjay and his two associates near Kurkuri bridge. While Sanjay’s motorcycle-borne associates managed to escape the police net, he was arrested by the police team along with the arms,” the SP said.
ASP Rakesh Kumar said Sanjay was carrying the ammunition in a shoulder bag and the bullets were packed in small packets. “He told us that the consignment was being brought to Patna from Gaya. It is not immediately known the consignment was meant for whom. Cartridges of AK-47 are usually not sold in the open market. It means that the consignment was meant either for Maoists or criminals,” Kumar said, adding that ATS and STF officials would also grill the arrested arms smuggler.
