Major crimes decline in state; LWE cases at zero now: Govt
Patna: State’s additional chief secretary (home) Arvind Kumar Choudhary on Monday said Bihar recorded a decline in major criminal cases such as murder, dacoity and riots in 2025 compared to the previous calendar year, attributing the improvement to better and more effective policing.
Addressing reporters at Suchna Bhawan here, Choudhary also claimed that no Left Wing Extremism (LWE)-related violence has been reported in the state for the past couple of years. He added that the number of Maoist-infested districts has sharply declined from 22 in 2013 to zero in the current year.
“Murder cases fell by 7.72%, dacoity cases by 24.87% and riot cases by 17.97% in comparison to last year (2024) due to prompt action by the police,” he said, adding that the decline in major criminal cases was significant.
Referring to enforcement action, the additional chief secretary said police arrested 3,35,000 people between Jan and Nov this year in connection with major criminal cases. Of these, 5,620 arrests were made in murder cases, 1,054 in dacoity cases, 2,082 in loot cases and 3,630 under the SC & ST Act and in rape and kidnapping cases. During the same period, police seized 4,528 firearms and 28,414 cartridges, he added.
Choudhary said a stronger intelligence-gathering mechanism has also led to a gradual reduction in incidents of communal tension across the state.
He added that the number of LWE-infested districts has now come down to nil. “The number of Maoist-infested districts used to be 22 in 2013, but now the number of such districts is nil because of anti-Maoist operations in the state,” he said.
“Now, there are only four districts of Gaya, Aurangabad, Jamui and Lakhisarai which have been identified as ‘legacy and thrust’ districts by the Centre due to the decline in the number of LWE-related violence,” he said.
Highlighting the role of the Special Task Force, Choudhary said, “Out of 1,727 extremists/criminals arrested by STF, 141 carried rewards on their heads.”
He said a total of 220 Maoists were arrested while one Maoist was killed in an encounter. He added that 59 regular arms, three arms looted from police, 496 country-made arms, 2,166 cartridges, 299 kg of explosives, 135 landmines or cane bombs and 168 detonators were seized. Besides, 20 mini gun factories were busted during the current year.
The additional chief secretary was accompanied at the press conference by director general of police Vinay Kumar, secretary and inspector general (prison) Pranav Kumar, special secretary K S Anupam and ADG (law and order) Pankaj Kumar Darad.
