film industry. Besides singing the title and other four songs of the first Bhojpuri film ‘Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo’, she gave her voice to dozens of hit songs in other Bhojpuri films, including ‘Lage Naahi Choote Ram’, ‘Bhaiya’, ‘Dulha Aesan Chaahi’ and a few more.

She also gave her voice to a song in Maithili film ‘Vidyapati’, which was released in 1964. ‘

Sunu Sunu Rasiya

’, a song in Maithili language, is still alive in the minds of lakhs of Maithili lovers and became unforgettable in Mithila region spread in most part of north Bihar and Nepal.

Old-timers of Bhojpuri film industry recall how the first President of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad, had then requested Lata Mangeshkar to give her voice for songs of the first Bhojpuri film. Dr Prasad hailed from Jiradei (Siwan), a Bhojpuri-speaking region in Bihar.

Besides the film’s title song ‘Hey Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo’, she sang other four songs e.g. ‘Kahe Basuriya Bajawale’, ‘

Mare Karejawa Mein

Teer’ and ‘Luk-Chhup Badra Mein’. All these songs later turned out as super hit in entire Bhojpuri speaking areas of Bihar, Nepal, eastern Uttar Pradesh and part of West Bengal.

She also sang popular Bhojpuri duets like ‘Lale-Lale Hothawa Se Barse La Lalaiya, Ho Ke Raas Chuwela’ and ‘Ja Re Ja Re Sugna Ja Re, Kahi De Sajanawa Se’ with Talat Mehmood in film ‘Lage Nahi Chhoote Rama’.
