L-20 meet stresses on women leadership role
Patna: The two-day L-20 Summit concluded at Gyan Bhawan here on Friday. L-20 chairman Hiranmay Pandya read out the statement and struck the gavel, marking its official acceptance. Over the course of the summit, several experts presented their papers on various topics, providing insights into labour affairs and emerging challenges.The event commenced with a pre-recorded message from Bhupender Yadav, Union minister for labour and employment, who extended his wishes to the delegates. “Governments, employers, trade unions, and international organisations must come together to ensure that social security systems are inclusive, adaptive, and accessible to all,” said Yadav.During the session, Ravi Raman, an expert in labor affairs, shed light on the changing landscape of work migration, primarily driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and information and communication technology (ICT). Raman stressed the importance of G20 countries recognising these significant transformations in the labour market.The draft statement emphasises the need to harmonize technological innovation with sustainable and just transitions. Furthermore, the statement advocates for the implementation of a comprehensive social security code that encompasses all workers, including platform workers, supported by tailored laws to address their unique needs.K K Tiwari, a senior trade union leader from the Indian National Trade Union Congress, praised the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) and associated unions for their democratic and successful organisation of the L20 Summit.The summit dedicated significant attention to the task force report on 'Women and the Future of Work'. It proposed measures to increase women's participation in the private sector and promote their leadership roles.Suggestions included providing incentives, creating a supportive environment, and implementing flexible working arrangements such as remote work and flexible hours. Accessible and subsidized childcare facilities were also identified as crucial to ensuring the sustainability of women in the workforce.Three key issues related to the implementation of social security were identified during the summit— universalization, financing, and portability. The delegates expressed unanimous commitment to achieving universal social security. They recognised wages and social security as essential components of decent work.Addressing the session, Abhay Thakur, additional secretary of ministry of external affairs, described the L20 Summit as "historic and impactful."
