PATNA: The Krishna Janmashtami festival was celebrated with devotion and fervour by devotees at homes and in temples across the city on Wednesday night. Many devotees, who were observing the fast, broke it after offering prayers to the Lord Krishna and getting prasad after the midnight. However, many of them would celebrate the festival on Thursday.

The century old Radhakrishna temple at Buddha ghat on the bank of Ganga was decked up on the occasion, besides a 24-hour ‘Ramcharitmanas path' began at the temple on Wednesday, which will conclude on Thursday afternoon. Describing this Janmashtami as a rare coincidence of ‘ashtami’— the eighth day with ‘rohini nakshatra’ as per the Hindu lunar calendar on Wednesday, the temple head priest Buddhan Ojha said observing of fast with devotion and prayers to Lord would fulfill all wishes of the devotees.

A six-day Janmashtami festival began with ‘bhajan-kirtan’ under a well decorated pandal at the Gola road temple. A large number of devotees, including women from neighbouring colonies, took part in it, said its priest Ramaswami Pandey. “The main function of Lord's birth will be held after Wednesday midnight and will continue till the the sixth day (Chhatthi) with distribution of prasad on September 12. About 2,000 devotees from several newly-developed colonies, extending upto Danapur, are expected to attend the concluding function,” he added.

An attractive ‘jhoola’, decorated with flowers and symbolising the Lord's childhood, was placed near the idols of Radha-Krishna at Khajpura-based Shiv temple. Men and women devotees, observing fast on the pious occasion, began visiting the temple from morning, said Devilal Shatri, a priest. Devotees also offered prayers and participated in the ‘bhajan kirtan’ till midnight, he added.

However, Mahavir temple near Patna junction will celebrate Janmashtami function from 9pm on Thursday, said Acharya Kishore Kunal, temple secretary. Recital of religious texts like Bhagwat Puran, Gita and Veda would begin after 10pm to be followed by grand arti at 12night, heralding auspicious birth of Lord Krishna.
