JAMSHEDPUR: Mahrashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has been summoned by a local court here in connection with his recent remarks on the Chhath festival being observed by Biharis living in Mumbai. Addressing a public meeting in Mumbai on January 31, Thackeray had termed the Chhath festival being observed by the people of Bihar in Mumbai as "farce".
The remark led to widespread agitation in Jharkhand and Bihar as a large number of people came out on the street and burnt the effigies of MNS chief in protest. A local lawyer, Hameed Raza Khan had lodged a case against Thack-eray in the court of chief judicial magistrate P K Moitra on February 2 allegedly for hurting the religious sentiments of a section of the society.
However, the case was later transferred to the court of judicial magis-trate, A K Tiwari, who heared the case on Tuesday and issued summon against Thackeray. The court has directed Thackeray to appear before the court on April 22, informed complainant-cum-lawyer, Khan here today. He said the court had taken cognizance against Thackery under section 153, 295A and 298 IPC. Alleging that the anti-North India approach of MNS chief has trig-gered a widespread agitation in several parts of Jharkhand and Bihar, he said innocent people from these states, who had gone to Mumbai in search of livelihood, were forced to flee owing to the violent act unleased against them by the MNS activists.
Such a move was not in the interest of the country and the MNS is bent upon encouraging regionalism. Khan said the court had forwarded a copy of the summon to the police commissioner of Mumbai to execute it. Earlier, the local court here had issued an arrest warrant against Thackeray for his anti-Bihari remark last year but Thackeray procured a stay order from the Jharkhand High Court. Sudhir Kumar Pappu, a lawyer and the East Singhbhum district committee spokesman of RJD, had filed the case against Thackeray in this regard.
