DARBHANGA: An iron bridge on Kamla river could not bear the load of a 16-wheel sand-laden truck and collapsed, breaking into two parts in Kusheshwar Asthan block of Darbhanga district Monday morning. The incident happened when a truck was crossing the bridge around 11am. The truck kept on hanging on the western part of the broken bridge. The truck driver and helper came out unhurt.
This bridge, connecting Satighat of Biraul sub-division and Rajghat of Samastipur district, was constructed in 2004 from the MLA Area Development Fund of the then MLA and Congress leader Dr Ashok Kumar.
Movement of people of 10 panchayats of Biraul block and adjoining areas of Samastipur and Khagaria districts has been affected after the collapse of the bridge. People are left with the only option of boats to cross the river from either side.
Locals immediately informed the authorities, following which a police team led by Kusheshwar Asthan police station SHO Amit Kumar reached the spot and carried out the rescue work.
According to sources, a plan had already been approved in 2021 for construction of a new bridge on the spot and the old one was repaired and barriers installed recently.
Tribhuwan Kumar, a social activist at Kusheshwar Asthan, said barriers were put up on either side of the bridge to stop heavy vehicles. "However, the barriers were removed by the miscreants, leading to more pressure on the bridge. An investigation should be done to identify the culprits causing damage to the bridge," he said.
Locals have demanded creation of diversion and immediate construction of a new bridge.
