IITP students shine at vehicle design event

students brought laurels to their alma mater by securing fourth and fifth positions in the innovation and design events respectively of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)-Human Powered Vehicle Challenge and Student Professional Development Conference held recently at

VIT University

, Chennai.

The IIT-Patna team was among 50 teams from across India and some foreign countries which participated in the events. The challenge required students to design and build human-powered vehicles based on a number of parameters such as energy required and speed.

The Patna team led by Haroon Rashid has designed a semi-recumbent cycle having features not available in a regular cycle. This human-powered vehicle incorporates several innovative and safety features. It consists of a circular steering and a multi-gear system that increases the power. This semi-recumbent cycle uses less power than a regular cycle. It has also ultrasonic sensors to alert the rider of obstacles, and adjustable seat. The cycle can ply for an average distance of nine to 20kmph, while the team members have attained the maximum speed of 26kmph.

"Human-powered vehicles can play a role in the development of a sustainable transportation system and provide access to remote areas. These vehicles have also a role to play in public health by keeping users fit," said team member Shubham Shukla, a second-year mechanical engineering student.

Meanwhile, IIT-Patna is organizing the first international symposium on 5G technologies from March 29 to 31. Researchers from academia, industry and government organizations are likely to share their research experience and views over the possible 5G technologies, standardization aspects, heterogeneous networks, architectural designs, wireless techniques and new hardware designs to pave the path towards research and development in near future.

5G communication network is envisioned as a paradigm shift over the existing networks, which could perhaps be a unified ubiquitous network supporting wireless connectivity of worldwide web applications. Such a cooperative network would be the result of an extensive heterogeneous networking.

State minister for education and information technology Ashok Choudhary will inaugurate the symposium.
