Goats sell for Rs 5k to Rs 2L for Bakrid

PATNA: With Bakrid falling on September 13, various breeds of goats have flooded city markets. Like in the past, Bakri Bazaar at Jagdeopath is drawing large number of customers.
The goats are available in the price range of Rs 5,000 to Rs 2 lakh. "Though more than a week is left for Bakrid, the sellers have already reached the market with their goats.

Buyers too have started pouring in from different parts of the city and its outskirts. On an average, 500 goats are being sold daily, generating a business of Rs 28 lakh," said Ziaullah Khan, a goat seller, adding that the cost depends on weight and breed of the goats.
He said a Sabzibagh resident bought three goats for Rs 4.5 lakh on Saturday. "Potential buyers in Patna don't mind spending a huge amount while buying goats on Bakrid," he added. Khan said goats are being sold at higher prices this year due to recent flood in certain parts of Bihar and the neighbouring states. "People have lost their livestock in Begusarai and Ballia, two big goat markets, due to the floods. As a result, sellers from these two towns are coming in less number this year. Since demand has surpassed supply, prices of goats might increase ahead of Bakrid," Khan added.
The Barbari breed from Uttar Pradesh, Ajmeri from Rajasthan, Jamnapari from Allahabad and Dumba from Kashmir are also available in the market.
"These are high breed goats with elongated ears. They really look beautiful. However, breeds from Bihar are much tastier and 70% of customers look for local breeds," Khan said.
Transporter Sarfaraz Alam, who supplies goats to the market, said buyers' rush would increase from Tuesday.
