PATNA: With just a day left for Eid-ul-Zuha, popularly known as Bakrid, people could be seen negotiating for goats in the Bakri Bazar on Bailey Road in the state capital on Friday. This time people are preferring goats of smaller or medium size.

Coordinator of the market, Mohammad Ziaullah Khan, said the charm of Bakrid is still missing. “The kind of rush which used to be there before Covid-19 pandemic is lacking even now,” said Khan, adding none of the 12 ‘dumbas’ brought from Rajasthan could find any buyer. “These are expensive ones, ranging from Rs50,000 to Rs1.50 lakh. They have not been sold. People are rather buying goats between Rs12,000 and Rs15,000 mainly. The costliest one has been sold for Rs75,000 so far this year. Earlier, the costliest one used to be sold over Rs1 lakh,” he added. Sarfaraz Mallick, whose trucks are used to bring goats from different parts of Bihar as well as outside the state, said there is some satisfaction compared to two previous years. “For past two years, there was no market. But this time it has slowly picked up,” he said, adding , “Since many people live in apartments, or even at home, they have no space to keep goats and prefer to buy one at the last moment,” Mallick said.

When asked about the range, he replied, “It varies. For instance, we calculate that average 1kg of mutton will cost around Rs1,200. Similarly, there are sellers who even weigh the live goat and charge around Rs400/kg. It costs the same when the mutton is weighed post-slaughter.”

One of the buyers in the market, Arshad Akhtar, said he bought two goats for Rs32,000 after much negotiation. “One should have the buying skills and understanding of the breed. There are several goats which are tall and good looking, but I go for the desi one as it tastes the best,” he said.
