Fortnight-long Pitripaksh Mela inaugurated in Gaya
GAYA: The fortnight-long Pitripaksh Mela began on Thursday with state revenue minister Alok Mehta and agriculture minister Kumar Sarvajeet lighting the ceremonial lamp to inaugurate the event on the premises of Vishnupad temple.
Over 15 lakh pilgrims from across the country and abroad are expected to visit Gaya this time to perform "pinddaan". A tent city with a capacity to accommodate 2,500 pilgrims has been set up at Gadhi Maidan by the district administration.
"Best possible arrangements have been made for the pilgrims. Apart from spiritual importance, 'pinddaan' has multi-dimensional aspect. It is also related to boosting the economy of the holy town by inviting more and more pilgrims, which would create employability," Mehta said.
Agriculture minister Kumar Sarvajeet said the preparations for Pitripaksh had started three months in advance this year. Welcoming the guests and the pilgrims, district magistrate Thiyagarajan SM said all necessary arrangements have been made for the convenience of the pilgrims.
Meanwhile, pilgrims have started performing the rituals. The three-day Gaya visit of Pandit Dhirendra Shastri of Bageshwar Dham is also scheduled from October 1 to 3. Pandit Shastri will be visit the Vishnupad temple and perform "pinddaan".
