‘Fast urbanisation causes pollution’

Patna: The two-day workshop on ‘Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment’, jointly organised by T P S College and postgraduate (PG) department of botany, Patliputra University (PPU), concluded here on Monday. Teachers, scholars and researchers, who participated in the workshop, discussed various problems caused due to drinking contaminated water.“Water crisis continues to persist in most of the remote places in the state, causing much hardship to people. Besides, several countries in the world were also reeling under various kinds of problems related to poor water quality,” said Prof Upendra Kumar Singh, principal of the T P S College.Delivering a keynote address, Patliputra University’s dean of science and head of the postgraduate botany department, Prof Rimjhim Sheel, said, “Fast urbanisation has caused water scarcity at several places and environment pollution. Collective efforts should be made to check its effect on people’s life.”

Take measures to combat water pollution

Bolisetty Satyanarayana, the general secretary of Jana Sena's state environment wing, has called on the state government to take action against increasing pollution in the seawater, which is posing a threat to the public and fishermen. Satyanarayana has requested the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the high court to intervene and take measures to protect the marine ecosystem. He also highlighted the issue of industrial pollution and the lack of action taken by the authorities despite a report submitted in 2016. The fishermen wing of Jana Sena has also demanded compensation for those evicted for the container terminal and highlighted the lack of rehabilitation for those displaced from Gangavaram port lands.

Kolhapur,Ichalkaranji reel under water cuts

The cities of Kolhapur and Ichalkaranji in Maharashtra, India are experiencing water cuts due to maintenance work carried out by the state electricity department. Repair work on the main power line in Kolhapur caused water supply disruption to most parts of the city. In Ichalkaranji, maintenance work on the Krishna Tap Water Supply Scheme led to a disrupted water supply. The frequent water cuts in Kolhapur have caused inconvenience to residents, who criticize the lack of planning and negligence by the municipal corporation.

Urbanites facing threat of drinking water crisis: Min

The Cauvery River Water Management Authority (CRWA) has been informed about the concerns regarding Cauvery river water sharing, according to the agriculture minister. The minister requested that the authority withdraw its recent order to release water, as the crops in the Cauvery catchment area are damaged and there is a threat of drinking water crisis. The state government plans to approach the Supreme Court on the matter. The minister also criticized the BJP for not attending the all-party meeting and commented on the BJP-JD(S) coalition.
