Stage set for opening of Sonepur fair on Nov 13

Chhapra: Preparations for the famous Harihar Kshetra Sonepur Mela in Saran district are in their final stages with officials eager to impress visitors with a rich cultural showcase. Saran district magistrate Aman Samir conducted a late-night inspection on Saturday, overseeing the setup for the fair's grand inauguration scheduled for November 13. The event, a beloved tradition, will run till December 14, promising 32 days of cultural immersion and entertainment.
According to Saran district public relations officer Ravindra Kumar, the administration is striving to deliver a memorable experience. "Our aim this year is to present cultural activities reflecting the unique heritage of every zone — north, south, east and west. In addition to inviting prominent artists from across the country, we are also ensuring ample opportunities for local talent," Kumar added.
Detailing the cultural agenda, Kumar said the department of art and culture has been allocated 12 days, the district administration 11 days, the information and public relations department two days and the department of tourism six days.
To engage younger visitors, the fair will feature a range of outdoor events, including kite flying, rowing regattas, wrestling matches and cricket tournaments. While past attendees expressed disappointment over the absence of elephants and rare livestock breeds, Kumar said efforts were being made to bring back these attractions, which hold a special place in the hearts of fairgoers.
The fair also draws traders from Kashmir, Ludhiana and beyond, showcasing woolen garments that remain a key attraction. Alongside the bustling marketplace, popular theatres will entertain crowds with a variety of performances, adding to the fair's traditional charm.
