The incident occurred near Revilganj railway station on the Chhapra-Varanasi route under the North Eastern Railway division. Sah, who worked as a daily wager, had planned his granddaughter’s wedding for next month. “The couple had taken Rs 1 lakh through a microfinance scheme of the company but were struggling to pay the weekly instalments. Representatives of the firm visited their home frequently, hurling abuses and demanding immediate repayment. The harassment had been on for several weeks, causing mental distress to the couple,” an officer from Jalalpur police station said, adding the couple consumed some poisonous substance to avoid harassment.

Revilganj SHO Subhas Paswan said the bodies were sent to Chhapra Sadar Hospital for postmortem. “The couple had been missing since the evening of June 2. We are waiting for a written complaint for further action. Investigation into the matter is underway,” he added.
