Demand for BAU’s herbal gulal surges ahead of Holi
Bhagalpur: The demand for herbal gulal developed by Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Bhagalpur, has risen manifold ahead of Holi, owing to its eco-friendly, organic and skin-safe properties. No harmful chemicals are used in its production for Holi celebrations and puja rituals.
BAU has developed eco-friendly herbal gulal as a safe and natural alternative to synthetic colours. Designed to be skin-friendly, non-toxic and environmentally safe, it is produced using ingredients derived from local flora while empowering rural women through self-help groups (SHGs) trained in eco-friendly production techniques under a rural development initiative.
BAU vice-chancellor Prof Dr DR Singh said demand had increased significantly since its launch in 2025 by Bihar governor-cum-chancellor of universities Arif Mohammed Khan. Scientists developed the product using natural and organic ingredients, including used flowers offered at local temples. The project has been named ‘From God to God’ under the ‘Waste To Wealth’ scheme.
Key plant-based materials include flower extracts and herbs, with some formulations using beetroot juice and spinach extracts for natural colours, along with corn starch. The vice-chancellor said the gulal is non-toxic and reduces the risk of skin allergies, irritation, rashes and other health concerns.
He added that the gulal is biodegradable, safe for soil and water, eco-friendly and easy to wash off without leaving permanent stains. The governor launched the product at ‘Kisan Mela 2025’ organised by BAU Sabour, and since then demand has remained high.
The university is promoting production among local women and SHGs as a means of self-employment and skill development. Encouraging the use of agricultural waste, the initiative focuses on empowering women through training in eco-friendly production techniques as part of rural development.
