Congress legislator party leader’s son found dead at home
Patna: Congress legislature party leader Shakeel Ahmed Khan's only son, Ayaan Zahid Khan, 17, a Class XII student of a reputed school in the city, was found dead at the legislator's govt residence, located at Minister's Enclave under the Gardanibagh police station area in the state capital on Monday morning. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide.
No suicide note was found at the residence, and the exact reason for the boy taking the extreme step is yet to be ascertained, police said.
Ayaan was found hanging from the ceiling fan inside his room at the legislator's govt residence, located at Minister's Enclave under the Gardanibagh police station area, police sources said.
Director general of police (DGP) Vinay Kumar, along with senior police officials, visited the legislator's residence and issued instructions to the officials concerned. Later, a forensic team reached the spot and collected samples from the room.
DSP, Secretariat, Anu Kumari, said the police received information about the incident at 8.30am, following which a team immediately reached the legislator's residence. "The body was sent for autopsy, and further investigation is underway," she said.
The DSP told this reporter that no suicide note was found in the room, and the exact reason behind the boy taking the extreme step is yet to be ascertained. "As of now, it looks like a case of death by suicide. The statement of the family members is yet to come," she said.
According to sources, Ayaan and his mother attended the birthday party of a close friend on Sunday evening. "They returned home around 11pm after having dinner, and the boy went to sleep in his room. On Monday morning, his room was found locked. When there was no response from inside, his mother called friends and relatives and broke open the door's lock, finding the 17-year-old boy hanging from the ceiling fan," said Sanjeev Kumar, SHO of Gardanibagh police station.
Khan, an MLA from the Kadwa assembly seat in Katihar district, was in Ahmedabad at the time of the incident. After hearing the news, he returned to Patna by afternoon. He also has a daughter, who is currently pursuing law in England.
Many netas, including state Congress chief Akhilesh Prasad Singh, former Congress party president Kaukab Quadri, MP Pappu Yadav, and former minister Shahnawaz Hussain, expressed shock over the incident. Quadri said, "We received the news of Ayaan's suicide in the morning. Such an incident is unbearable for any parent."
Pappu Yadav wrote on X: "I am deeply saddened by the news. The only son of my friend Shakeel Ahmed Khan died untimely. My condolences to Shakeel bhai's family."
A friend of Ayaan, Umar Khan, also expressed shock over the death. "We studied together. He was a bright student, and it's unbelievable that he died by suicide," he said.
During the visit of the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, to the state capital on Jan 18, Ayaan had met him on the stage. He had presented a painting to Rahul, who appreciated the artwork.
