Patna: The Bihar Congress on Sunday celebrated the 119th birth anniversary of freedom fighter and its senior leader Jagjivan Ram, a former deputy prime minister and eight-time MP from Sasaram who held several ministerial portfolios in the Union govt.
Jagjivan Ram was also the Congress’ dalit icon from the 1920s during the pre-Independence period. At the state Congress headquarters, Sadaquat Ashram, party leaders and functionaries led by their state chief Rajesh Ram garlanded his portrait. They also recalled his contributions and said he remained an inspiration for social justice.
Speaking on the occasion, state party chief Rajesh Ram said Jagjivan Ram’s entire life was dedicated to national service, social justice and the uplift of deprived and weaker sections of society. As a long-time parliamentarian, he raised the voice of people in the Lok Sabha, and as defence minister worked to strengthen national security.
“His life, dedicated to service and struggle for the weaker sections, will always remain an inspiration,” Ram said.
Among those who also paid tributes to Jagjivan Ram were senior party leaders Kripanath Pathak, Kapildeo Prasad Yadav and Brajesh Prasad Munnan, along with several other functionaries.
