Complex liver cancer surgery performed at AIIMS-Patna

Patna: On International Childhood Cancer Day (Feb 15), the department of paediatric surgery at AIIMS-Patna successfully performed a complex liver cancer surgery on a three-year-old child.

The three-year-old boy was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a rare and aggressive liver cancer in children.


“The child underwent a right hemihepatectomy, a highly complex and meticulous surgical procedure in which the entire right half of the liver was removed. The surgery lasted over seven hours and required advanced expertise in paediatric oncological surgery. Such procedures are performed at only a handful of specialised centres in the country,” a spokesperson of AIIMS-Patna said on Sunday.

“In addition to liver cancer, the child was found to have associated congenital anomalies, including Meckel’s diverticulum and an inguinal hernia, both of which were successfully corrected during the same operation, highlighting the comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach of the surgical team,” the spokesperson said.

The surgery was performed by the department of paediatric surgery team comprising Dr Amit Kumar Sinha, Dr Saurav Srivastava, Dr Amit Kumar, Dr Rashi, Dr Digamber Chaubey, and Dr Gaurav.

“Critical support was provided by Dr Utpal Anand and Dr Basant from the department of gastrosurgery and Dr Chandni from paediatric anaesthesia, whose expertise was vital to the success of this prolonged and technically demanding surgery,” the spokesperson said.
