The minister had allegedly threatened a sub-inspector of police, Rajiv Ranjan, with ruining his career. Choubey was unhappy over Ranjan’s decision to enter the name of a BJP worker, Laxman Dubey, in the ‘goonda register’ of the Naya Bhojpur police outpost.

on Monday. As soon as the SHO introduced himself, the minister lost his cool and threatened to strip him of his uniform for taking action against the BJP worker.

“Do you think all those sitting here are ‘goondas’? How do you dare to book a party worker under ‘Goonda Act’? I will get your uniform stripped if you don’t mend your ways,” a police officer quoted Choubey as saying.

“Wo manniye hain. Unhone jo thik samja kaha (He is an honourable minister. Whatever he thought is better, he uttered),” Ranjan, who assumed charge as SHO on September 3, told this newspaper over the phone on Tuesday.

The SHO claimed that Dubey’s name already existed in the ‘goonda register’. “I sent a notice recently asking him to appear at the police station,” he added.

Buxar SP Upendra Nath Verma said he had asked the SHO concerned to lodge ‘sanha’ in connection with the incident. The SP said the minister shouldn’t have humiliated the SHO in full public view.

Police sources said that Dubey, a resident of Koran Sarai police station in Buxar district, was earlier chargesheeted in a case related to violation of prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC. The case against Dubey was lodged in 2003.
