PATNA: With campaigning coming to an end for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections on Wednesday evening, a litmus test awaits chief minister (CM)
Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) in five constituencies – Kishanganj, Katihar, Purnia, Bhagalpur and Banka – where polling will be held on Friday.
Altogether 93,96,298 voters will decide the fate of 50 candidates, including three women, in five seats in the second phase. Polling will be held at 5,436 centres.
From the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), JD(U) has fielded its candidates on all the five seats going to polls in the second phase – three in Muslim-dominated Seemanchal region and two in the eastern part of the state.
In an indication that plenty is at stake for him in this round of elections, the CM penned an emotional letter to the people of Bihar on Tuesday, recounting the work he had done since 2005 to change the face of the state.
In the 2019 general elections, the JD(U) had won four of the five constituencies where polling will be held on Friday. Only the Kishanganj seat had gone to the Congress.
Though the JD(U) is contesting all five seats in the second phase, senior BJP leaders, including PM Narendra Modi, Union minister Rajnath Singh and party president J P Nadda have campaigned in the region to seek support for the candidates of Nitish’s party.
