BUXAR: The "battle of Buxar" presents a very interesting picture. Having sent BJP's Lal Muni Choubey for four consecutive terms to the Lok Sabha, this constituency is set to witness a multi-cornered contest in the 2009 parliamentary polls.Sitting MP Lal Muni Choubey of BJP, Jagdanand Singh, RJD, Shyam Lal Singh Kushwaha, BSP and Dadan Pehalwan, an independent, are the main contestants, feel observers.
Former Union minister K K Tiwary of Congress, too, is making his presence felt adding yet another facet to this multi-cornered contest.
"I am least bothered about others as my good works would surely attract voters towards BJP," said Choubey. Recalling the works done by him, he said, "A large number of bridges and culverts have been constructed in the interiors of the constituency and voters have also been witness to the judicious use of MPLAD funds."Former minister Jagdanand Singh, RJD, on the other hand, feels that voters are wary of Choubey due to his failure to meet their expectations. "People of all sections are supporting me and BJP is bound to lose the seat," he claimed. The rivals from two main political camps, however, cannot rule out the presence of Kushwaha and Pehalwan who are leaving no stone unturned to gain ascendancy in terms of people's support.Pehalwan, who lost 2004 polls by just over 50000 votes, has been criss-crossing the constituency and claims to have visited over 1000 villages in the last few days. This includes use of helicopter for two days during the campaign."I am a local and people of all castes and communities are supporting me," he said.Kushwaha is banking on the BSP policy of giving all castes their due share. "BSP cares for all the communities and this is showing up in the support the party is getting in Buxar," he said. Kushwaha also believes that Buxar being a district bordering Uttar Pradesh, the voters would extend their support to the party on the basis of performance of Mayawati government in UP.The claims and counter-claims notwithstanding, voters appear to be in no mood to open their cards till the last moment."It is too early to speak. Let the contestants work hard for the votes," said Shashi Bhushan of Dumraon.
