Buxar: A 27-year-old man triggered panic among villagers after climbing a high-voltage electricity tower following an argument with his wife at Pasahara village under Itadhi police station area in Buxar district on Sunday.
The man, identified as Suraj Nat, who is married and has two children, climbed the nearly 60-metre-high tower located close to the village, alarming residents who feared a fatal accident. Eyewitnesses said he stood atop the iron structure with his arms outstretched, prompting villagers to gather at the spot and appeal to him to climb down safely.
On receiving information, a team from Itadhi police station rushed to the spot and immediately asked the electricity department to cut power supply to the nearly 200-kV transmission line passing through the tower to prevent electrocution.
Police used loudspeakers to counsel the man, asking him to remain calm and assuring him of help. After nearly an hour-long effort, Suraj agreed to come down, bringing relief to his family members and villagers who had assembled there.
Villagers said the incident followed a domestic argument after Suraj asked his wife for money and she refused. Angered by the refusal, he allegedly climbed the tower.
Itadhi station house officer Sonu Kumar said the overheated iron structure increased danger, while timely police action and power shutdown averted a tragedy there.
