Patna: The number of +2 colleges deprived of Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) affiliation since the topper scam rocked the state in May last has reached up to 88 with the state exam board suspending the affiliation of 36 more institutions on Tuesday for non-compliance to prescribed norms.

These schools and colleges are among the 212 institutions that were granted affiliation by the BSEB when it was helmed by Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh, who is now in jail in connection with the merit scam. The scam pertained to involvement of the BSEB chairman and others who allegedly helped undeserving pupils top the plus-two exams.

The BSEB on Tuesday also decided to lodge an FIR against Asharfi Das Sahu Samaj Inter Mahila Mahavidyalaya at Nirmali and Millat College at Birpur in in Supaul district. “These colleges admitted students without getting affiliation,” BSEB chairman Anand Kishor told newsmen.

The institutions divested of affiliation have been served separate show-cause notices, asking them to reply within 15 days why their affiliation should not be cancelled permanently. The BSEB took these actions following a probe into complaints about their affairs.

The probe was initiated in July, and the BSEB has so far received probe reports regarding 150 of the 212 colleges. Most of these institutions were found “running” without infrastructure, faculty and staff members as well as library, laboratories, sports ground, sports equipment and fire safety equipment etc.

Kishor said the BSEB would make special arrangements for the students of the institutions stripped of affiliation so that their career was not jeopardised.
