BSEB begins process to revise syllabus
Patna: The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) has initiated the process to revise its syllabus in accordance with the latest norms as well as usher in other academic reforms to impart quality education through institutions affiliated with it.
Sources at the Board office said the syllabus was last changed almost 25 years ago and even though some committees were formed in between to look into possibilities of curriculum revision, it could never become a reality.
“Apart from introducing examination reforms, the Board’s focus is also on quality education. The first step towards it is expansion of our academic council which will look into the academic reforms required for bettering our schools,” BSEB chairman Anand

The governing body of the Board also gave its nod to the constitution of an “investigation unit” in the BSEB that will inspect schools and colleges and recommend action for improving their quality. “The unit will comprise seven officials (at deputy secretary level), who will be allotted different districts under them. They will be asked to visit the schools in the respective districts for 2-3 days every month and submit a report to the BSEB headquarters, which will be forwarded to the state education department,” the chairman said.
The investigation unit will also review the functioning of district education officers, who are also assigned to inspect schools by the state government. “It may be expanded depending on the reports and requirements in future,” he added.
The Board office will now be open from Monday to Saturday as against its five-day week routine. “Almost every day we leave around 9pm or even later. Hence, this decision was taken by the governing body and will be in force from this Saturday itself. The timings will be from 10am to 5pm,” Kishor said.
The governing body also approved renovation of BSEB HQ and its campus development, estimation for which will be ready in a month. Several other decisions of the Board, such as the introduction of e-tenders, digital marking scheme, barcoding of answerbooks, pre and post exam software, buying computers, laptops, mobile phones and vehicles for Board officials were also ratified by the governing body on Thursday.
Multi-purpose offices soon
BSEB’s nine multi-purpose regional offices in each of the nine divisional headquarters in the state are likely to start functioning from November. “We have created new posts and recruitment of officials and employees will be completed within a month. We will also rent out buildings from where these offices will work,” BSEB chairman Anand Kishor said. The aim is to start the offices before the compartmental exams scheduled in the waning half of November so that students can get their admit cards from these centres. “Once our website is up in about a month and previous records are uploaded on it in the next 2-3 months, students will be able to get their marksheets and other documents from the regional offices,” he added. The permanent office will take about two-years to come up.
