Sasaram: The body of a 25-year-old woman was found stuffed inside a suitcase near the Station Road vegetable market in Dehri Town police station area on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Maroon Khatoon. Police recovered the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital, Sasaram, for the postmortem.
After the body was sent for autopsy, police teams visited the houses of women reported missing in the city, carrying photographs of the deceased to establish her identity. Initial efforts yielded no confirmation. Later, two women from Batsadi village in Sakaldiha (Uttar Pradesh) arrived at Nagar police station and, after seeing the photographs, identified the deceased as their daughter, Maroon Khatoon.
The family told police that Maroon Khatoon was married on Nov 5, 2022, to a resident of Jakki Bigha, who works as an electrician. The couple has a child aged around two-and-a-half years. The family alleged that she was subjected to harassment by her husband.
Following identification, the woman’s relatives levelled allegations of murder against her husband and other family members. They claimed the husband was involved in an illicit relationship with his maternal aunt’s sister, which often led to disputes between the couple.
According to the family, the husband informed them over the phone on Saturday night that Maroon Khatoon had left home. While they were waiting for her at her parental house, they later received information that her body had been recovered from a red suitcase in Dehri.
Police officials said they received information about an unidentified woman’s body found inside a suitcase near the vegetable market, following which senior officers were alerted. The SDPO (Dehri-1) inspected the spot, and a forensic science laboratory (FSL) team collected evidence. Photography and videography of the place were also conducted.
Police suspect the woman was murdered at another location and her body later dumped in the market area. A medical board is conducting the postmortem. CCTV footage, cellphone location data, missing persons’ records and other technical evidence are being examined.
