PATNA: The results of the first phase of urban local body (ULB) polls on Tuesday brought many surprises. While the mother of a state's cabinet minister lost the election in Dighwara nagar panchayat, the wife of a BJP MP faced humiliating defeat in Hajipur nagar parishad.
State's labour resources minister Surendra Ram's mother Kalawati Devi lost the election of ward councillor from ward number 7 of Dighwara nagar panchayat by a margin of 139 votes to one Muneshwar Paswan.
While Kalawati got 238 votes, Muneshwar, a farmer, won the election by securing 377 votes.
In Hajipur nagar parishad election, Rama Nishad, the wife of BJP's Muzaffarpur MP Ajay Nishad, faced a humiliating defeat in the hands of a greenhorn, Jyotsana Kumari. Rama, who earlier held the post of the Hajipur Nagar Parishad chairperson, was this time contesting election of ward councillor from ward number 1. But she lost the election to Jyotsana by 53 votes. Jyotsana, who has completed MBA course from the LNMI, Patna, is daughter-in-law of JD(U) leader Vijay Sahni.
In Bagaha nagar parishad, JD(U) MLC Bhishma Sahani's wife and daughter-in-law both lost the election. While Sahani's daughter-in-law Rinki Devi contested the election for the post of the chairperson, his wife Godawari Devi for the ward councillor from ward number 35.
In Bhojpur, Kiran Devi, wife of JD(U) state general secretary Manoj Kumar Upadhyay, was elected as the chairperson of the Piro nagar Parishad, while Surendra Prasad Keshari was elected as the deputy chairman of the Piro nagar parishad. At Shahpur nagar panchayat , incumbent chairman Jugnu Devi was re-elected. At Jagdishpur nagar panchayat, Santosh Kumar Yadav was elected as the chairman.
In Aurangabad, the election results of five municipal bodies were declared on Tuesday. In Aurangabad Municipal Council, outgoing chief councillor Uday Kumar Gupta defeated his nearest rival Mohammad Yusuf Azad Ansari by a margin of 11,081 votes.
In Barun, Indu Devi defeated her nearest rival Ranjit Kumar and secured the post of chief councillor. Priyanka Singh was elected to the post of chief councillor in Navinagar.
In East Champaran, the counting of votes of Raxaul and Chakiya municipalities and Sugauli nagar panchayat took place at Munsi Singh College in Motihari and the results were declared by district returning officer-cum-DM Shirshat Kapil Ashok at 2pm. In Raxaul, Dhurpati Dewi was elected chief councillor of municipal council. In Chakiya, Pawan Sarraf defeated his nearest rival Radheshyam Prasad by a margin of 2,471 votes and elected chief councillor. In Sugauli, Nashrin Ali came out victorious for the post of president of nagar panchayat.
